About Mike Hurley
Mike was born in Magherafelt, Northern Ireland in 1958 and came to Canada in 1983 at the young age of 25. Music and Gaelic football dominated his youth as did soccer that saw Mike advance to a semi pro league.
Mike first settled in Vancouver and moved to Burnaby in 1988. Jennifer and Mike met in 1998 and have three boys who are in elementary school. Mike’s daughter attends Simon Fraser University.
Mike joined the Burnaby Fire Department in 1988. He advanced from driver to technical rescue team member and then to hazardous material specialist, instructor, Lieutenant, Captain and he also served as an Acting Assistant Chief.
Mike served as Vice-President of the Burnaby Fire Fighters Association from 1996 to 2001 and he became President of the association through to 2009. He also served as President of the BC Provincial Fire Fighters Association from 2008 to 2016.
As President of the Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, Mike led the effort to raise $15 million to build a facility that accommodates families and burn unit outpatients from both Vancouver General and BC Children’s hospitals. Mike’s leadership continues today, and he serves as the 6th District Vice President of the 315,000-member International Association of Fire Fighters and is one of their 16 board members.
Mike’s leadership with the Burnaby Fire Fighters Charitable Society highlights his dedication to people and to our community. The Society raises money for community groups and non-profit organizations and supports more than 50 charities. Over $800,000 annually is given for bursaries and they operate a Nutritional Food Program that benefits kids at 26 elementary schools, four high schools and 4 youth centres. Mike was honoured to receive the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and her Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his service to our community.
