Under Mike’s leadership more than 25,000 new homes – including 19,000 new rental apartments – have been built or are in development.
Continent-Leading Renter Protections
Mike ended demovictions in Burnaby and brought in the strongest renter protections in North America.
A City Agency Dedicated to Building Affordable Housing
Mike created the Burnaby Housing Authority to help build purpose-built below-market and rental housing – with the first two projects set to deliver 387 new rental homes.

Mike made sustainable investments in renewing and improving Burnaby’s civic infrastructure so residents can continue enjoying top-tier, public amenities for generations to come.
State-of-the-Art Community Hub
Mike pushed ahead with the purchase of the Christine Sinclair Centre – Burnaby’s central hub for athletics, community gatherings, and wellness – opening up the former private facility to all residents.
Three New Community Centres
Mike spearheaded the construction of three new community centres to serve Burnaby’s growing population:
- Burnaby Lake Recreation Centre will be the largest aquatic centre in Western Canada and feature a 10-lane, 50 metre pool, a 6-lane 25 metre pool and an NHL-sized rink.
- Cameron Community Centre and Library will be replaced and expanded to include dedicated youth and seniors' spaces.
- Brentwood Community Centre will serve one of the fastest growing neighbourhoods in the city.
A New Community Theatre
Mike supported the replacement of the James Cowan Theatre at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts with a new 364-seat modern performance venue.

Public Safety and Climate Resilience
Mike championed investments to keep Burnaby safe, now and long into the future.
New, Expanded RCMP Headquarters
Mike initiated the construction of a new, larger police headquarters that will improve recruitment and retention of officers to the country’s second largest RCMP detachment.
Wildfire Early Warning System
Mike implemented Burnaby’s first-ever wildfire early warning system that allows the fire department to detect and respond quickly to forest fires on Burnaby Mountain in the face of climate change.
Community Safety and Well-being Plan
Mike supported Burnaby’s plan to better connect residents, first-responders and city staff to make public spaces safer, improve the civic response to climate change driven events, and boost strategies to better support youth and vulnerable residents.
