A Burnaby that works for everyone is a city that is caring, innovative and fiscally responsible.

Mike believes in putting people first. He got into politics because he couldn’t stand to see long-time Burnaby residents demovicted from their homes. It is his belief that a city should care for its residents and provide the services and amenities that allow them to lead safe, productive and happy lives.

Mike sees innovation as key to Burnaby’s future – whether it is streamlining government processes and cutting red tape or attracting high-tech industries and good jobs to the city.

Most importantly, Mike believes in taking a balanced, fiscally responsible approach to the City’s finances: staying debt free, keeping taxes down and making sustainable investments in renewing and improving public infrastructure and amenities for future generations.

Our platform has been crafted in the knowledge that the City of Burnaby sits on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Peoples. We are committed to working with the Host Nations as well as urban Indigenous communities in Burnaby to create a city that works for all of us.

Housing

Build the homes that our community needs

Build 1,000 new affordable rental homes through the Burnaby Housing Authority, including family-oriented townhomes.
Continue pressuring the provincial government to return decision-making over residential zoning to municipalities and repeal Bills 25, 44 and 47, which have allowed for up to six homes to be built on a single-family lot.
Speed up permitting times for new home construction to reduce costs for builders and provide homes for families faster and at lower cost.
Keep development cost charges down to improve home affordability and make it easier for more projects to move ahead.

Community Investment

Renew and expand our community infrastructure

Finish delivering the Burnaby Lake Recreation Centre, the Cameron Community Centre and Library, and the Brentwood Community Centre.
Continue upgrading parks and playgrounds through the Park Pulse improvement program.
Work with TransLink and other levels of government to increase the number of north-south bus routes serving Burnaby.
Continue pressing the provincial government to prioritize Phase 2 of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project and get it back on track.

Public Safety

Keep our city safe

Improve the recruitment and retention of police officers by completing the expansion of the Burnaby RCMP detachment.
Expand the Burnaby Mountain wildfire early-warning system to include Central Park and Robert Burnaby Park.
Move the Buller Ave. temporary shelter to an appropriate location elsewhere in the city when its lease ends in 2028 and build the planned Buller Beresford Park in its place.
Move ahead with a city-wide emergency planning exercise in the next term.

Responsible Fiscal Management

Keep taxes down and the city debt free

Maintain property taxes at or below the regional annual average.
Preserve Burnaby’s status as one of the few large cities in B.C. with zero debt.
Continue the City’s award-winning financial reporting practices.

Jobs & Innovation

Streamline city processes and attract good jobs

Further reduce permitting times and costs for small businesses by cutting red tape and leveraging the productivity-enhancing tools that were successfully piloted as part of the City’s Development Approvals Process Program.
Create the Burnaby Innovation District to accelerate the city’s growth into a leading hub for innovative, high-tech businesses.
Attract more innovative, job-creating companies to Burnaby by streamlining the set-up process for businesses moving to the city.
Attract more film and TV productions by ensuring that the Burnaby Film Office remains responsive to industry needs.
Continue to partner with SFU on the Civic Innovation Lab, which leverages cutting-edge academic research to solve real-world problems in our city.

Arts & Culture

Enhance the vibrancy of civic life in Burnaby

Finish the construction of a new, modern performance venue at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
Provide $250,000 in annual funding to support arts and cultural events in the community.
Leverage the new Burnaby Lake Recreation Centre to attract regional- and national-level sporting events and turn Burnaby into the sports competition capital of Canada.
